Installation & Power

Unpack and inspect contents. Install batteries and prepare for first use.

  1. Install Batteries: Remove battery cover on back, insert two AA batteries observing polarity.
  2. Attach Wrist Strap/Lanyard: Thread through eyelets on unit for secure handling.
  3. Initial Power On: Press and hold POWER button until unit beeps and display activates.
  4. External Power (Optional): Can be powered via the PC interface cable when connected to an appropriate power source.

WARNING! Use only recommended batteries. Do not mix old and new or different types of batteries.

First-Time Setup

Power on unit; follow on-screen prompts for initial configuration.

  1. Select Language: Use ROCKER key to highlight language, press ENTER.
  2. Acquire Satellite Signals: Go outdoors with clear view of sky. Unit will automatically search for satellites.
  3. Set Time & Date: Navigate to SETUP > TIME menu to configure.
  4. Calibrate Compass (if applicable): Follow on-screen instructions for electronic compass calibration.
  5. Configure Navigation Settings: Set preferred units (metric/statute/nautical), north reference, etc.

CAUTION! For best GPS performance, allow several minutes outdoors for first satellite acquisition.

Controls and Display

Access menus and functions via front panel buttons and ROCKER key. Front Panel: POWER, PAGE, ENTER/MARK, ROCKER (up/down/left/right), IN, OUT, MENU, QUIT.

Display Pages: Use PAGE key to cycle through: Satellite Status, Map, Navigation, Highway, Active Route, Main Menu.

Setup Menu: Configure system, units, time, display, interface, and navigation preferences. Map Menu: Set up map orientation, detail level, and data fields. Navigation Menu: Manage waypoints, routes, tracks, and proximity alarms.

Connecting to a Computer

Use provided serial PC interface cable to transfer data and upload maps.

  1. Turn off GPS unit.
  2. Connect the round, 4-pin connector to the port on the back of the GPSMAP 76.
  3. Connect the 9-pin serial connector to an available COM port on your computer.
  4. Turn on GPS unit. It should be recognized by compatible software (e.g., Garmin MapSource).

Tip: Ensure MapSource or other software is installed and configured for the correct COM port before transferring data.

Basic Navigation

Creating and navigating to waypoints, and using the TracBack® feature.

  1. Mark a Waypoint: Press and hold ENTER/MARK. Edit name/symbol if desired, press ENTER to save.
  2. Go To a Waypoint: From Map or Navigation page, highlight 'Go To', select a waypoint from list, press ENTER.
  3. Follow a Route: Create a route in the Route menu (sequence of waypoints). Activate it for navigation.
  4. Use TracBack®: Saves your track. To retrace path, access TRACKS menu, select TracBack, and choose direction.
  5. Pan Map: Use ROCKER key to move cursor around map page. Press ENTER to mark location or view information.

WARNING! GPS accuracy can be affected by terrain, buildings, and atmospheric conditions. Always have a backup navigation method.

Advanced Features

Celestial Information: Access sun/moon data from the Main Menu > Celestial. Proximity Alarms: Set alarms to alert when within a specified distance of a waypoint. MOB (Man Overboard): Quickly mark your current position as a waypoint and begin navigation back to it by pressing and holding ENTER/MARK for 3 seconds, then selecting 'MOB'.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives. Rinse with fresh water after exposure to salt water. Ensure battery compartment seal is clean and intact for waterproofing.

CAUTION! Do not expose to extreme temperatures for prolonged periods. Replace batteries if leakage occurs.
