Installation & Setup

Unpack and inspect contents. Install batteries and power on device.

  1. Install batteries: Open battery compartment, insert two AA batteries (alkaline, NiMH, or lithium) observing polarity.
  2. Charge (optional): If using rechargeable NiMH batteries, charge using external charger before use.
  3. Insert microSD card (optional): For additional maps, insert card into slot until it clicks.
  4. Power on: Press and hold POWER button until device starts.

WARNING! Use only recommended battery types. Do not mix old and new batteries or different types.

First-Time Use

Power on GPSMAP 64; follow on-screen prompts.

  1. Acquire satellite signals: Go outdoors with clear view of sky; wait for device to acquire satellites (may take several minutes).
  2. Set language: In SETUP menu, select preferred language.
  3. Calibrate compass: Follow on-screen instructions to calibrate electronic compass.

Connecting to Devices

  1. Connect to computer: Use USB cable to transfer maps, waypoints, tracks, and routes using Garmin BaseCamp.
  2. Pair with smartphone: Enable Bluetooth on both devices; on GPSMAP 64, go to Settings > Bluetooth > Add Device.
  3. Connect ANT+ sensors: For heart rate monitor, speed/cadence sensor, etc., go to Settings > Sensors > Add New.

Tip: Ensure latest software updates are installed via Garmin Express when connected to computer.

Using Maps & Waypoints

Supports Garmin topographic, marine, and road maps, plus BirdsEye Satellite Imagery.

  1. View map: Press PAGE to go to Map page; use ROCKER to pan, press UP/DOWN to zoom.
  2. Create waypoint: Press and hold ENTER at desired location; select "Save Waypoint".
  3. Navigate to waypoint: From Map or Compass page, select "Go To" and choose destination.
  4. Create route: In Main Menu > Routes > Create Route, add waypoints in order.
  5. Track recording: Tracks are automatically recorded; view in Main Menu > Track Manager.
  6. Use BirdsEye Imagery: Download via Garmin BaseCamp (subscription required); select from map layers.

WARNING! Always carry a paper map as backup. GPS signals may be unavailable in dense cover or canyons.

Wireless Features

Bluetooth: Pair with smartphone for smart notifications (calls, texts, alerts) and LiveTrack (share location in real-time). ANT+: Connect to compatible sensors (heart rate, temperature, speed/cadence).

Care & Maintenance

Clean with soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals. Store in cool, dry place. Replace batteries when low.
