Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Choose a mounting location with clear view of sky for GPS reception.

  1. Mount the bracket: Use provided hardware to securely mount the bracket to a flat surface.
  2. Connect power: Route the power/data cable to the unit and connect to a 10-35V DC power source. Install the in-line fuse.
  3. Connect NMEA devices: If interfacing with autopilot or other instruments, connect NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 cables as needed.
  4. Connect transducer: For sonar use, connect the compatible transducer cable to the labeled port.
  5. Secure the unit: Snap the GPSMAP 430s onto the mounted bracket and tighten the security screw.

WARNING! Ensure all power is OFF during installation. Route cables away from moving parts and high heat. Seal any deck penetrations.

First-Time Setup

Power on the unit; follow initial prompts.

  1. Acquire GPS signal: Place unit with clear view of sky. Initial acquisition may take several minutes.
  2. Set language and units: Use the SETUP menu to select language (ENGLISH default) and units (nautical miles, knots, etc.).
  3. Calibrate compass (if applicable): Follow on-screen prompts if using electronic compass data.
  4. Configure alarms: Set anchor drag, off-course, and other safety alarms as desired.
  5. Load additional charts: Insert SD card with purchased charts if needed.

CAUTION! Ensure the unit is securely mounted before vessel movement. Verify all connections are waterproof.

Access menus via the PAGE and MENU buttons. Front Panel: POWER, PAGE, MENU, ZOOM IN/OUT, ROCKER key (up/down/left/right/ENTER).

Key Functions: POWER turns unit on/off. PAGE cycles through main display modes. MENU accesses context-sensitive options. ROCKER key navigates menus and moves the cursor on the chart.

Settings Menu: System (Language, Units, Backlight), Navigation (Route Preferences, Alarms), Sonar (Frequency, Gain, Range), Communications (NMEA Settings). Chart Setup: Detail, Orientation (North Up, Course Up), Waypoints & Routes management.

Connecting Devices

NMEA 0183: Connect to talker/listener wires for data exchange with autopilots, instruments. NMEA 2000: Connect to a compatible backbone for plug-and-play integration. Transducer: Connect to sonar port for depth/temperature/fishfinding.

  1. Turn off all devices before making connections.
  2. Refer to the wiring diagram in the appendix for NMEA 0183 pinouts.
  3. Ensure NMEA 2000 network is properly terminated and powered.
  4. Select correct data sources in the Communications setup menu.

Tip: Use marine-grade heat-shrink connectors and sealant for all external wire connections.

Navigation Basics
