Installation Overview

Unpack and inspect all contents. Plan installation location carefully for optimal visibility and accessibility.

  1. Choose Mounting Location: Select a location with clear view, protected from direct spray, and within reach of operator.
  2. Prepare Mounting Surface: Ensure surface is flat, strong, and clean. Template provided for cutout.
  3. Route Cables: Plan cable paths from display unit to power source and connected devices. Avoid sharp bends.
  4. Make Connections: Connect power, data, and antenna cables before final mounting.

WARNING! Disconnect all power sources before making electrical connections. Ensure mounting surface can support unit weight.

Mounting the Display Unit

Two mounting options: Flush mount (recommended) or bracket mount.

  1. Flush Mount:
    • Use paper template to mark cutout on dashboard.
    • Cut opening using appropriate tools.
    • Insert display unit from front, secure with provided clamps from rear.
  2. Bracket Mount:
    • Attach bracket to surface using appropriate fasteners for material (fiberglass, wood, metal).
    • Slide display unit onto bracket until it clicks into place.
    • Secure with locking screw.

CAUTION! Do not overtighten mounting hardware. Ensure unit is level for optimal GPS performance.

Electrical Connections

Connect the power/data cable to the vessel's electrical system.

  1. Identify cable wires: Red (Power +), Black (Power -), Shield (Ground), and data wires (NMEA 0183 In/Out).
  2. Connect RED wire to a switched 10–32 Vdc positive terminal via an inline fuse (3 A recommended).
  3. Connect BLACK wire to vessel's negative/ground terminal.
  4. Connect cable shield to vessel's ground at a single point to avoid ground loops.
  5. Secure all connections with crimp connectors and protect with heat-shrink tubing or electrical tape.

Tip: Use marine-grade wire and connectors. Route power cables away from other electronics to minimize interference.

NMEA Network Setup

For connecting to NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 networks.

  1. NMEA 0183:
    • Connect NMEA 0183 Out (Yellow wire) to other device's NMEA In.
    • Connect NMEA 0183 In (Blue wire) to other device's NMEA Out.
    • Connect Ground (Brown wire) to other device's NMEA Ground.
  2. NMEA 2000:
    • Connect the included NMEA 2000 drop cable to the unit's dedicated port.
    • Connect the other end to your vessel's NMEA 2000 backbone using a T-connector.
    • Ensure backbone is properly terminated with 120-ohm resistors at each end.

WARNING! Do not connect NMEA 0183 outputs directly together. Verify baud rates (default 4800) match on all connected devices.

Connecting External Devices

Ethernet port for Garmin Marine Network devices (radar, sounder, etc.).

  1. Turn off all devices before connecting.
  2. Use standard Ethernet cable (CAT5e or better) to connect unit to other Garmin network devices.
  3. For radar: Connect radar cable to radar module, then connect module to network via Ethernet.
  4. For sonar: Connect transducer cable to sounder module, then connect module to network.
  5. Insert SD card for additional charts or software updates.

Tip: Label all cables during installation for easier future maintenance.

Initial Power-Up & Configuration

Apply power to the unit for the first time.

  1. Ensure all connections are secure and correct.
  2. Turn on the vessel's DC master switch, then the switch for the chartplotter circuit.
  3. The unit will power on and display the Garmin splash screen.
  4. Follow on-screen prompts:
    • Set language and units (nautical/statute).
    • Agree to terms and conditions.
    • Configure initial map and display settings.
  5. Go outside with clear view of sky for initial GPS satellite acquisition (may take several minutes).
  6. Access System Settings menu to configure NMEA data sources, alarms, and network devices.

CAUTION! Do not interrupt power during initial boot-up or software update process.

Maintenance & Care

Disconnect power before cleaning. Use a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with fresh water. For stubborn stains, use a mild soap solution. Do not use chemical cleaners, solvents, or abrasives.

CAUTION! Ensure the unit is powered off and connections are dry before reapplying power. Periodically inspect cables and connectors for corrosion or damage.
