Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Insert batteries and prepare for initial use.

  1. Insert Batteries: Open the battery compartment on the back, insert two AA batteries (alkaline, NiMH, or lithium) observing correct polarity.
  2. Power On: Press and hold the POWER key on the front of the unit until the startup screen appears.
  3. Acquire Satellite Signal: Go outdoors with a clear view of the sky. The device will automatically begin searching for satellites.
  4. Install Optional Maps: If using additional maps, insert a compatible microSD card into the slot on the side of the unit.

WARNING! Ensure the battery compartment seal is clean and the cover is securely closed to maintain waterproof integrity.

First-Time Setup

Power on the device; follow on-screen prompts to configure initial settings.

  1. Set Language: Upon first start, select your preferred language from the list.
  2. Configure Units: Choose your preferred units of measurement (Statute, Metric, Nautical).
  3. Set Time: Configure the time format (12h/24h) and time zone.
  4. Calibrate Compass (if equipped): If your model has an electronic compass, follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate it by rotating the device slowly.
  5. Acquire Satellites: Go outdoors. The "Acquiring Satellites" page will show signal strength. Wait for a 3D GPS fix.

CAUTION! For accurate compass calibration, stay away from metal objects and strong magnetic fields.

Controls and Settings

Access the main menu by pressing the MENU button twice. Front Panel: POWER, PAGE, ROCKER key (up/down/left/right/ENTER), MARK, MENU, QUIT, ZOOM IN/OUT.

Key Functions: POWER (On/Off/Backlight), PAGE (Cycle through main pages: Map, Compass, Main Menu, etc.), ROCKER (Navigate menus, move map cursor), MARK (Create waypoint at current location), MENU (Access context-sensitive options), QUIT (Go back/Exit).

Settings Menu: Access via Main Menu > Setup. Configure System (Language, Units, Time), Display (Backlight, Contrast), Tones, Routing, Marine, Geocaching, and Interface options.

Connecting Devices

USB Connection: For data transfer and software updates. ANT+ Wireless: For sharing data with other Garmin devices. NMEA 0183: For connecting to marine instruments (requires optional cable).

  1. Turn off the GPS device before connecting cables.
  2. USB: Use the provided USB cable to connect to a computer. The device will appear as a removable drive.
  3. Wireless Sharing: From the Main Menu, select "Wireless" to send or receive waypoints, tracks, or routes with another compatible Garmin unit.
  4. MicroSD Card: Insert card into the slot on the side to load additional maps.

Tip: Ensure the USB port cover is fully closed after disconnecting to maintain waterproofing.

Navigating & Waypoints

Create and navigate to waypoints, follow tracks, and create routes.

  1. Mark a Waypoint: Press and hold the MARK button. Edit the name/symbol if desired, then select "OK".
  2. Go To a Waypoint: From the Map or Compass page, press MENU, select "Go To", then choose a waypoint from the list.
  3. Create a Route: Main Menu > Routes > Create Route. Select points on the map or choose existing waypoints.
  4. Follow a Track: Tracks are recorded automatically. To navigate a saved track, go to Main Menu > Tracks, select a track, and choose "Navigate Track".
  5. Project a Waypoint: Create a waypoint at a bearing and distance from your location (Main Menu > Waypoints > Project Waypoint).

WARNING! Always carry a paper map and compass as a backup. GPS signals can be obstructed or unavailable.

Geocaching Features

Supports paperless geocaching by loading GPX files from geocaching websites.

  1. Load Geocaches: Connect the device to your computer via USB. Copy GPX files from a site like Geocaching.com into the [Drive]:\Garmin\GPX folder.
  2. Access Geocaches: Disconnect the USB. Go to Main Menu > Geocaches to view the list of loaded caches.
  3. Navigate to Cache: Select a cache from the list and choose "Go".
  4. Log Your Find: After finding the cache, you can mark it as found. Logs are stored for later upload to the website.

Tip: Use the "Calendar" icon to view hints and previous logs for the geocache.

Care & Cleaning

Unplug all cables before cleaning. Use a soft, damp cloth with fresh water. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners.

CAUTION! Do not submerge the device while cables are connected. Ensure all port covers are securely closed before exposure to water. Rinse with fresh water after exposure to salt water.
