Installation & Setup

  1. Install Batteries: Open battery compartment, insert two AA batteries observing polarity.

First-Time Use

Basic Navigation

  4. Track Your Path: Unit automatically records track log. Use TracBack® to reverse your path.
  5. Measure Distance: Use ROCKER to move cursor on map screen; distance displays at bottom.

Tip: For best accuracy, ensure you have good satellite reception (shown on satellite status page).

Advanced Features

Utilize the altimeter, compass, and mapping capabilities.

  1. Altimeter: Displays elevation, records barometric pressure trend. Calibrate using known elevation.
  2. Electronic Compass: Provides heading when stationary. Recalibrate periodically or when prompted.
  3. Map Upload: Use MapSource software and PC interface cable to upload detailed maps to unit memory.
  4. NMEA Output: Connect to marine instruments to share position data.
  5. Sun/Moon Info: View sunrise/sunset and moon phase information for any date/location.

WARNING! Electronic compass may be affected by nearby metal objects. Calibrate away from vehicles, phones, and other electronics.

Data Management

Transfer waypoints, routes, tracks, and maps between GPS and computer.

  1. Connect to PC: Use PC interface cable to connect GPS data port to computer serial port.
  2. Use MapSource: Install Garmin MapSource software. Use "Transfer" menu to send/receive data.
  3. Clear Memory: From MAIN MENU, select "Setup", then "System", then "Clear Memory" to reset data (waypoints, routes, tracks).

Note: Clearing memory does not delete the built-in basemap or uploaded detailed maps.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with fresh water after saltwater use. Use mild soap and soft cloth. Ensure seals are clean and undamaged.

CAUTION! Do not use harsh chemicals, solvents, or high-pressure water spray. Do not open unit beyond battery compartment; internal repairs require qualified service.
